Fests and events, 12/2.
"As one of four featured artists of the Berkeley Art Museum's Bending the Word exhibition, [Martha] Colburn's visionary (an overused adjective, but apt here) and frequently hilarious Myth Labs is playing in constant rotation in the museum gallery, but a special program at the adjoining Pacific Film Archive on December 2 offers a fuller tribute to the besieged beauty of her candy-coated color schemes, labor-intensive materiality and frenetic, unyielding stop-frames." Max Goldberg at SF360.
"Looking for some great movies that you've never heard of?" asks Cullen Gallagher in the L Magazine. "Throughout December, the French Institute will be highlighting the work of two filmmakers who have unfortunately fallen through history's cracks. Refracted Light: The Films of Quinto and Jean-Gabriel Albicocco examines the unjustly neglected careers of this father-and-son team. And since none of their movies have been released on DVD (and only one of Jean-Gabriel's was ever released on an unflattering VHS, now long out-of-print), this series is really a golden opportunity worth taking advantage of."
"This year has seen the release of several films that exemplified the potential for screen artistry," writes Cullen Gallagher at Hammer to Nail, "yet no movie better conveys a love for storytelling than Melvin Van Peebles's Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha." Melvin Van Peebles: A Salute from MoMA and IFP runs through Saturday.
"Film Comment contributor Dudley Andrew will host a four-day Bazin confab commencing this Thursday," notes Chris Chang at the filmlinc blog.
Online listening tip. "Tim Fulton interviews Helen Hood Scheer about her film Jump!, which is part of this weekend's Zoom: Family Film Festival."
