NYFF 08, 10/3.
John Magary introduces an interview: "Richard Peña joined the Film Society of Lincoln Center in 1987, controversially replacing New York Film Festival co-founder Richard Roud as the event's programming chief less than a year later. Now overseeing his 21st festival alongside his FSLC colleague Kent Jones and critics J Hoberman, Scott Foundas and Lisa Schwarzbaum, Peña recently spoke with The Reeler about this year's selection and how the NYFF both reflects and rejects some of contemporary cinema's most conspicuous trends."
Updated through 10/8.
As the festival "glides and sometimes stumbles into its second week," the New York Times' Manohla Dargis presents her quick takes on Che, Changeling, Night and Day, The Headless Woman and, very briefly, Afterschool, Gomorrah, The Windmill Movie, Lola Montès and Ashes of Time Redux. And there's an accompanying audio slide show.
Eric Kohn has an overview of the festival for the Jaman Blog.
Updated today: Entries on 24 City, The Class and Happy-Go-Lucky.
More entries - quite a backlog, actually - are on the way.
Earlier NYFF-in-general entries: 9/16 and 9/23.
Update, 10/6: The Reeler presents the second part of John Magary's interview with Richard Peña.
Update, 10/7: The filmlinc blog posts the NYFF 08 trailer.
Update, 10/8: "What does it say about our culture that The Wrestler and Changeling, the two most prominent American selections in this year's film festival, are shameless Oscar bait?" asks Stephen Holden in the NYT. More films briefly reviewed: A Christmas Tale, Let It Rain, Tokyo Sonata, Serbis, Bullet in the Head, Tulpan and Chouga.
