Universal fire.

Via Anne Thompson, who has details and background, CNN video of the fire "at Universal Studios that destroyed the building housing the King Kong exhibit and damaged a video library vault."

Updates, 6/2: What burned, according to the Los Angeles Times ("Nothing is lost forever," Universal President Ron Meyer said of the videos); Susan King in the Los Angeles Times on what all's been shot on that back lot; plus maps, photos, etc.

David Thomson comments at the Guardian on a lesson that might - or might not - be gleaned from the fire.

Update, 6/4: "The flames at Universal Studios last weekend may disrupt viewing plans for some film buffs in the coming weeks, though no movies appear to have been lost forever, studio executives said in response to queries on Wednesday." Michael Cieply reports for the New York Times.
