The
San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival opens March 13, runs through the 23rd, and the
San Francisco Bay Guardian has a preview package. Besides the eight
capsule reviews:
Johnny Ray Huston on the two films in the lineup by
Brillante Mendoza: " The differences in pace and look between
Foster Child and
Slingshot demonstrate that Mendoza is capable of sculpting widely contrasting true visions of Manila's streets, which in turn shows that the exact same setting can take on widely varying characteristics based on one's perspective at any given moment."
For
Kimberly Chun, the highlight of the
tribute to
Edward Yang is
A Brighter Summer Day for "its unseen but subtly telegraphed depths, referential richness, and the sheer breadth and long-shot scope of its four-hour running time."
The fest is screening
Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantánamo Bay, also slated for
SXSW, and
Marke B talks with screenwriters
Jon Hurwitz and
Hayden Schlossberg, who also wrote
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, and
John Cho (Harold).
