Berlinale. Competition, round 1.

The
Berlinale's announced its first round of
Competition titles, eight so far:
Errol Morris's
S.O.P. Standard Operating Procedure. World premiere. Back in November,
David D'Arcy spoke with Morris about his Abu Ghraib documentary.
Doris Dörrie's Kirschblüten - Hanami (Cherry Blossoms), with Hannelore Elsner. World premiere. Dörrie in a press release: "In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolize the impermanence of life; they are a reminder of how fragile and fleeting life is but also how beautiful."
Wang Xiaoshuai's Zuo You (In Love We Trust). World premiere. Ioncinema has a plot summary.
Fernando Eimbcke's Lake Tahoe. World premiere. His second feature after Duck Season. Brief plot summary: Ioncinema.
Andrzej Wajda's Katyn. International premiere. Poland's entry in the Oscar race. See also: a BBC report and interview; and a Belarusian's view.
José Padilha's Tropa de Elite. International premiere. Just a few weeks ago, Alexei Barrionuevo profiled Padilha for the New York Times, reporting, too, on the brouhaha this film's stirred up in Brazil, where it's a massive hit.
Damian Harris's Gardens of the Night. World premiere. Watch a making-of at the site.
Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood. International premiere. We've been hearing a lot about that one lately, of course.
