Cannes @ 60. Index.
Revised: First, the awards - and of course, commentary on the awards and on the festival overall.
And below, an overview of what's been collected here so far of the initial impressions of a bafflingly wide range of films from critics writing for blogs, papers and trades. Naturally, updates to the index, and indeed, to the entries for the individual films carry on.
The discussion of what many of us following Cannes from afar might be looking forward to eventually seeing, which was started here, also continues.

I'll start by adding to the rushed comments (yikes) I left in the entry for The Edge of Heaven.
I've been pleasantly surprised by the positive reviews for Control. Sure, it was going to look great; but it's good to hear that there's evidently substance to it as well. High on my list.
4 Months..., definitely. The way reviewers have been describing the construction of scenes; I'm intrigued.
The few warnings that have been issued about the way No Country ends don't have me worried one bit; in fact, just the opposite.
I'll want to see both, but Terror's Advocate would be higher on my list at the moment than Sicko.
Some afternoon or evening will be the right afternoon or evening for The Man From London. Given a choice, I bet I'd go for The Flight of the Red Balloon, then Paranoid Park before London. That's probably a sin of some sort, but there you go.
I'd be up for seeing The Orphanage tonight, actually. The Band's Visit, absolutely.
I'm very curious, though perhaps not burning crazy about Persepolis, Silent Light, Go Go Tales, possibly Ploy, a little leery of Savage Grace, but you never know.
There'll be others appearing the next few days, too, I'm sure.
Posted by: David Hudson at May 23, 2007 3:00 PMI'll make an early bid for "Secret Sunshine" for the Palme d'Or, even though it hasn't screened yet. Early reports from Korea and Scott Foundas are ebullient with praise.
Posted by: Edward Choi at May 23, 2007 3:06 PMDavid, your indices are indispensible!! Thanks so much.
Posted by: Michael Guillen at May 23, 2007 3:48 PMBefore the festival began, two films on my scorecard were already particularly covered in drool: the Man From London and Secret Sunshine.
The saliva stains haven't gotten any drier for either, Hungarian dubbing or no (and I suspect it would take something monumental to wear down the tower of interest in Secret Sunshine) interest piqued by Foundas's review and Lee's backcatalogue). But I'm now just as excited about Paranoid Park, Ploy and the Flight of the Red Balloon. And very curious about many more, including Magnus, Control, Go Go Tales, etc.
I'm also wondering why I've still failed to acquaint myself with Akin and Reygadas up to now. There were reasons at the time, but on the heels of their new films I'm questioning them very hard. I guess that's what DVD is for...
Posted by: Brian at May 23, 2007 4:24 PMI would've come to Cannes had I known that Hondo was on the big screen in 3D!
