Weekend lists.
At Movie City News, Ray Pride offers "a top 20, plus a documentary top 10, and then some more. I didn't see as many movies in 2006 as most of the stalwarts on the annual international film festival death march, but there were many moments that reminded me: I like movies." His #1: Children of Men. And at Movie City Indie, "a few worthies I overlooked before filing," comments, footnotes and more.
In a turn-of-the-year issue of the LA CityBeat, Andy Klein, Wade Major and Mark Keizer list their tops. You'll find Children of Men in all three.
William Goss puts Children of Men at the top of his list at Hollywood Bitchslap, too.
"I'll confess that I was a bit annoyed when the film I had decided was the closest thing to perfect I saw all year suddenly became the critics' darling in highbrow end-of-the-year polls," grumbles Bryant Frazer. "Anyway, there it is - uncompromised and uncompromising, and never less than absorbing over a two-and-a-half-hour running time, The Death of Mr Lazarescu is officially The Best Thing I Saw All Year."
Harry Tuttle lists "20 films, roughly in preferential order."
Bitter Cinema points to Sam McAbee's list of the "Most Overrated Indie / Underground / Art Filmmakers of All Time!" in Chunklet: "[A]t least when the guy disses Godard, he urges the clueless hipster to watch Robert Bresson instead!"
The Reverse Shot team presents a list of the "eleven most deeply offensive things we saw at the movies this year" at indieWIRE.
At Bright Lights After Dark, C Jerry Kutner lists "some of my favorite performances from 2006 that were, for whatever reasons, overlooked by the SAG."
Patrick's got Thoughts on Stuff, including the films he's looking forward to seeing in 2007.
Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film put Grey Gardens at the top of its list of "100 Documentary Films of All-Time."
Online listening tip #1. Marshall Fine, Gene Seymour and Stephen Whitty discuss the bests and the worsts on the Leonard Lopate Show.
Online listening tip #2. Fraser Lewry's "best of 2006." Sample a track from all 20 albums.
Online viewing tips. TickleBooth's "Best Online Videos of 2006."
And finally for now, an event. This coming Wednesday, ST VanAirsdale will be moderating a discussion of "The Best and Worst Films of 2006": "Participants include Salon critic Stephanie Zacharek, New York Magazine's David Edelstein and Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman; we'll have all kinds of fun with lists and clips and plenty of audience Q&A." Maybe they'll discuss these, too. More here.
(David here, by the way. Just having account problems at the moment, is all.)
