Lists. PopMatters.
Now that Bill Gibron has seen to the usual disclaimers, the PopMatters staff counts all up and down the lists. You'll find the least usual suspects on the top ten DVDs list posted at the Short Ends and a Leader blog, never "overly impressed with pure technical merits. A stellar picture and perfect surround sound might be amazing, but when wrapped around the latest lame-ass Hollywood hack job, who gives a digital dung heap?" Speaking of which, there's a list of worsts, too.
Updated through 1/5.
The Prestige tops the list of the year's best films, while the #1 spot on the list of worst films of the year is reserved for Little Man, "the most excruciatingly horrible experience anyone could have at a movie theater in the last few years."
The staff also highlights the best in TV and, mentioned earlier: "The Top 10 Films of 2006 That You've Never Heard Of" and the "Top 10 Criterion releases of 2006."
Updates, 1/4: The staff selects another set of DVDs, 20 in all; and Matt Mazur revisits the "Best Supporting Performances of 2006."
Updates, 1/5: The staff picks its top 20 films; there are a few surprises in their top ten. Their #1: The Departed. And Matt Mazur considers the "Best Lead Performances of 2006."
