Fall previews. September.

With the
New York Times and the
Los Angeles Times running their big fall preview packages this weekend, I thought it might be a good idea to reshuffle them a bit and rearrange the offerings in order of the release of some the more interesting films coming up this season, adding links to earlier previews, festival reviews, etc.
Frankly, this thing got a little out of hand and, though the list is far from complete, I had to split the soon-unmanageable entry into four, one for each month.
September 13
Al Franken: God Spoke. Gabriel Wardell. David D'Arcy and Jonathan Marlow (both here). An "outspoken and pretty damn funny portrait." Aaron Hillis (Premiere). Trailer.
September 15
The Black Dahlia. Steve Rose interviews Brian De Palma and James Ellroy (Guardian). James Mottram interviews De Palma (Independent); so does Robert W Welkos and, somewhat related, Kenneth Turan lists his five favorite noirs (LAT). Entertainment Weekly. Venice reviews. Trailer.
Confetti. EW. Trailer.
The Ground Truth. Mark Olsen previews the season's Iraq movies (LAT). Earlier: Tim Greirson (LA Weekly) and Ed Gonzalez (Slant). Trailer.
The Last Kiss. EW. Trailer.
The US vs John Lennon. David D'Arcy's review right here. Melissa Palmer has a quick chat with John Scheinfeld (LAT). Venice reviews. Trailer.
September 20
Old Joy. Me (here). More reviews (IMDb) and more (MRQE). Trailer.
September 22
All the King's Men. David D'Arcy's review here. David M Halbfinger tells the story of its difficult making (NYT). Reed Johnson gets together with David Milch and Sean Penn (LAT). Trailer.
American Hardcore. David D'Arcy (here). Trailer.
Jesus Camp. Phenomenal string of comments following Eugene Hernandez's piece at indieWIRE. Trailer.
Jet Li's Fearless. Todd at Twitch. EW. Trailer.
Renaissance. Premiere. Trailer.
The Science of Sleep. Mark Olsen calls up Michel Gondry (LAT). Michael Guillén has a much longer conversation. Trailer.
Sólo Con Tu Pareja. Ed Gonzalez (Slant).
Train Man.
September 27
The Last King of Scotland. Martin Miller meets Forest Whitaker (LAT), one of Karin Durbin's "Six Breakthrough Performances" (NYT). David D'Arcy's review here. Earlier: "Wrapping Telluride, 9/5." Trailer.
September 29
Be With Me. Todd at Twitch. J Robert Parks. Trailer at the site.
Broken Sky. Michael Guillén: "In his follow-up to the incandescent A Thousand Clouds of Peace, Mexican director Julián Hernández channels Tsai Ming-Liang with a notable and effective eschewal of dialogue. Cinnoman skin and briefs constitute the bulk of the wardrobe and atmospheric references to water abound (rain, showers, tears). Hernández even incorporates an intertitular tip of the hat to Apichatpong Weerasethakul about a third of the way into the film. Other than for these obvious homages, however, the film is uniquely (and poetically) his own." (Evening Class)
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. Scott Macaulay interviews Dito Montiel (Filmmaker). Trailer.
Open Season. Melissa Palmer talks with animator Jill Culton about her debut feature (LAT). EW. Trailer.
School for Scoundrels. Susan King talks with Todd Phillips. EW. Trailer.
September 30
The Queen. Venice reviews, Graham Fuller (Film Comment) and Mark Lawson, too, considers how it'll be received in the UK (Guardian). Trailer.
Click on to October, November or December.
