Online viewing tip.

The trailer for Sin City. Directed by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, it's looking a bit like Tarantino's forced Lichtenstein into a back alley and stripped him of everything but black, white and, for mercy's sake, one color of his choice.

Just awful. And I was REALLY looking forward to this one, too.

Robert Rodriguez is an energetic director with a lot of ideas, but many of his ideas are bad ones and he has no sense of coherent storytelling.

As a fan of the comics, I'll enjoy seeing them brought so perfectly to life -- I can't help but get a kick out of seeing such faithfully rendered images. But I'm pretty sure that by being so faithful, something will get lost in the translation...the noir sense will be so articulate in look and tone that the spirit of Miller's work will be lost. But hey, maybe it'll surprise me.

In defense of the film, that "trailer" isn't a finished product (you can tell by the six-and-a-half minute running time alone)... it was obviously a show reel for execs or a trade show... the effects, backgrounds and editing aren't done, and a true trailer would have more story elements thrown in, not just some action figure posturing. Give Rodriguez a chance, he cut up his DGA card to make this one happen.

I mean, even Mr. P. E. Pill up there thinks the film works.

You're right, of course, Aaron. It was late last night my time (and you can tell by the vacuuous comment I followed up with, too) when I typed "trailer." Todd at Twitch identifies this as footage shown at Comic-Con.

I hope you're also right about the prospects for the film. At the moment, though, it does look like it needs a lot of work.

Meantime, the Pill has been chased away; he'll be back, no doubt. But speaking of spammers, I've been having to close off a lot of early entries to comments - if anyone reading this has tried to comment on one of these, please don't let that keeping you from posting; just choose a newer, not-yet-shut-down entry, reference the entry you'd like to comment on and post away.

Come the revolution, spammers are the first up against the wall.

Yeah, if this was an actual trailer I would be worried, Ah, so this movie is for comic book nerds ONLY. When making a comics adaptation, I don't know if it's advisable to use the actual comic as a storyboard... Something has to be added, or what's the point?
